Perhaps America was too busy being afraid of it during their various red scares to look at communism objectively. However, I would not call it completely absent. For example, presidents like teddy Roosevelt can be considered very socialist. As for today, I think that the mass of American voters is a little too conservative for anything that even mentions socialism.
